Harmony is fundamental in family life. What is more beautiful than a husband, wife, and children living together in harmony.
Yet dwelling under one roof does not automatically produce this idyllic environment. Differences in personality, opinions, tastes, and goals can crop up and cause divisiveness.
The solution is for the family to devote itself to a common purpose – not merely for practical benefit, but as a value in and of itself. Shared ideals bind a family together. Its members will be inspired to resolve arguments, for they recognize that they have a mission to accomplish as a team, and have greater potential when united.
What should this unifying goal be? The most obvious aim of any family is to build itself and help its members grow. Beyond this, however, lies a higher aspiration: elevating and sanctifying G-d’s Name in the world. Members of a Jewish family should be conscious of their responsibility, as individuals and as a unit to inspire others to draw closer to G-d and to explore the heritage He bestowed upon us, the Torah.
To the degree that a family exemplifies G-dliness in the eyes of all who behold them, their sense of purpose and unity will increase and the foundations of their home will be strengthened.
