The Prussian king, Friedrich the Great, was once discussing theology with the French philosopher, Jean Baptiste du Boyer, Marquis of Argens. He asked: “Can you give me one single, irrefutable proof of the existence of G-d?”
The Frenchman did not hesitate: “Yes, indeed, Your Highness, and in one word: the Jews!”
Already thousands of years ago, the role of Israel was defined: to serve as a living proof of the existence of G-d and a testimony to His divine protection. As the prophet Isaiah stated in the Name of the Creator:
You are My witnesses - the word of G-d - and My servant, whom I have chosen, so that you will know and believe in Me, and understand that I am He; before Me, nothing was created by a god, nor will there be after Me.
Isaiah 43:10
By its very survival against all odds, the immortal Jewish nation constitutes a living testimony to the existence of Him Who preserves it.
The renowned Jewish philosopher, Rabbi Moses Maimonides, expounds upon the inexplicable, awesome bond between G-d and People in his Epistle to Yemen:
“And likewise, the Creator has promised us, through His prophets, that we shall never be lost completely, and He will never utterly destroy us; we shall never cease entirely to be a righteous people.
“And just as it is unconceivable for the Creator to cease to exist, so, too, is it impossible that we (the Jewish nation) be lost and disappear from the world.”
Just as the Creator is eternal, so, too, is His nation, Israel, eternal.
